Vetting and verifying multimodal false information. A challenge for democratic societies
2021
The rapid proliferation of fake news is a challenge for free societies, founded on freedom of expression and information, endangering their democratic systems through audience confusion. Fake news is a type of disinformation with the ability to alter the logical orientation of readers, and as evidenced in different academic publications, it can radicalize the citizen and favour violence. This news is also created to confuse audiences and reinforce certain trends. This is important enough to produce a scientific interest in information science studies and urge the creation of tools capable of detecting and identifying this type of news, especially those disseminated by social networks, where…
The design of didactic sequences in which it promotes a methological …
Scientific power in the Spanish press during the Pandemic : a portrait of new leaders while explaining its risk
2021
This work is based on the mediatisation of society theory, which establishes more attached importance and the presence of the mass media as mediators in various social processes, as well as on Production Studies, that analyse creative skills to draw an audience, to apply these theories to the media representation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective is to analyse how the generalist media have represented male/female scientists, who have become social benchmarks during the first COVID-19 wave in Spain. Our initial hypothesis considers that the purpose of the mediatisation of scientific discourse was to contribute answers to, and to keep society calm, in an uncertainty context. By content …
2022
Disinformation is a communicative phenomenon inevitably linked to current times. Since the terms 'fake news' were globally accepted to describe a communicative practice, especially since 2016, we have experienced various phases of social response, with successive movements of study, analysis and denunciation. The collective perception is having begun a stage, which appears to us as irreversible, where the Habermasian public sphere would take place mainly in social networks. The phenomenon is associated with a change in political communication, with campaigns that unapologetically adopt the practice of disorientation, sowing doubt in voters about democratic processes and their legitimacy, as…
Metaphorical dimension of idioms in TV series for German, Norwegian and Spanish audiences
2022
Over recent years, internet TV series have grown in popularity to become one of the audiovisual products with the highest audiences worldwide. The Covid crisis, with limitations on movement, has further increased their success during 2020-21. English is by far the most common language for such productions, which are typically offered to non-anglophone viewers in translated format, with either subtitles or dubbing. One of the main challenges in translation here concerns the use of idioms, since these do not always have a fixed equivalent in the target language. Taking as a starting point a corpus of drama series from Netflix and Amazon Prime, this study considers the metaphorical dimension o…
The proceedings of Spanish Audiovisual Councils on discriminatory discourse
2021
Mass media, and especially television, are powerful discursive instruments, responsible for the construction of social imagery through ideologically determined content. For this reason, the creation of a regulatory body with authority over the audiovisual sector in countries without one was urged by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2000. Spain is the only EU country without an audiovisual council with authority at the state level. Currently, only the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia (CAC), created in 2000, and the Audiovisual Council of Andalusia (CAA), which dates from 2004, operate in Spain. Within an environment increasingly marked by hate speech, this research anal…
